Winnie Cheung Creates an Unforgettable Creature Thriller with ‘Last Call’

I’m a huge fan of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi, and if there’s one area of North American filmmaking I hardly see many talents of Asian descent in, it’s in genre. But with the creature body thriller Last Call now just having its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW Midnight Short Program on Sunday, March 9, writer & director Winnie Cheung created one hell of a mark as a visionary filmmaker to look out for with this incredible short film that is an homage to David Cronenberg, David Lynch, and Wong Kar-wai while creating an indelible unique stamp of her own.

New Trailer for ‘The Fall Guy’ Packs a Punch

Wow! Does anyone else think our newsfeed is starting to look like the ’80s? Between Ghostbusters, Alien, Star Wars, Beetlejuice, and now The Fall Guy, I honestly feel like I’ve been transported back in time, as nostalgia runs rampant across all of pop culture. But if the buzz from SXSW is any indication, at minimum, The Fall Guy is shaping up to be one of the most outrageous nostalgia blockbusters of the year!

‘The Fall Guy’ is Already Setting Records

It’s been a heck of a week for Ryan “I’m Just Ken” Gosling! After unleashing perhaps the greatest musical performance in Oscar history, Gosling and his “Barbenheimer rival” Emily Blunt joined director David Leitch and co-star Hannah Waddingham at SXSW in Austin to debut The Fall Guy. And in addition to getting terrific reception, audiences discovered the movie has set a very unique Guinness World Record!

‘Inbetween Girl’ Shows How Maturity Sometimes Means Accepting Your Mess

The road to adulthood is messy, imperfect, and unkind. Media depictions of adolescence tend to rule these realities out, or otherwise forgoes depicting representation of this demographic at all. But the truth is, sanitizing the experience does not hide the mistakes and many questions that will inevitably be made along the way.

‘The Beauty President’ is a Beauty to Behold

As I watched the Pride flag waving as the credits ran at the end of The Beauty President, I remembered growing up in the early 2000s and how I knew nothing about what that flag meant then. That 20 years later, I can see it at my city’s town hall flying next to the United States flag. Director Whitney Skauge and the film’s subject, Terrance Alan Smith, bring a beautiful historical moment in LGBTQ+ history to the forefront with an air of grace and love that I hope everyone could see.

‘I Will Make You Mine’ Completes the ‘Surrogate Valentine’ Trilogy

After COVID-19 forced the cancellation of SXSW, several movies set to debut at the annual Texas festival had to shift their premieres. Friend of the NOC Lynn Chen’s directorial debut, I Will Make You Mine, was one of those movies. Fortunately, the movie has finally been released on blu-ray/DVD and is available to stream on nearly every digital platform!

See With Your Ears, Hear With Your Eyes

My lovely, amazing and infinitely patient wife recently pointed out to me that I’ve been gone more than I’ve been home since we got married in December. There’s been a lot going on lately, hasn’t there? I just got home from three straight months of touring, and I’m leaving tomorrow to go to my little brother’s wedding and then I’m flying into Austin, Texas for my first official showcase at South By Southwest with a bunch of my bestest nerdcore friends like Doc Awk, Jesse Dangerously, Adam WarRock, MC Lars, Schaffer the Darklord, Random, MC Frontalot, and more. It’s going to be nuts.

Before I head out again, I’ve got a whole slew of new stuff to share with you.

Strictly Nerdcore with Adam WarRock, Tribe One, & Mega Ran

As you know, we love talking about hip-hop here at The Nerds of Color. More specifically, the subgenre known as Nerdcore has a special place (and its own category) here as well. So it was a big deal to get three of the biggest names in the game to sit down for a special episode of Hard N.O.C.

Joining Keith (@the_real_chow) on the show are overly enthusiastic hip-hop artists Adam WarRock (@eugewarrock), Tribe One (@tribeonewon), and Random (a.k.a. @MegaRan). As always, Hard N.O.C. Life is directed by the indomitable Nelson Wong (@aarisings).
