With the ever-growing list of whitewashed and white savior films and television series — including the recent release of the live-action anime film Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi — it’s no wonder many people are upset. However, a comedy troupe from UCB Los Angeles called Asian AF has decided a smart way to shed light on the whitewashing problem.
They created a shirt using just four words.
Scarlett. Emma. Tilda. Matt.
I received a few emails and messages from people who wanted to support the AfroGeeks Unite! summer camp, but didn’t want to wear a shirt with a raygun on it. I completely understand. We’re living in interesting times and the raygun (with the RBG colors) design could be interpreted in a variety of ways… ways some folks may not be comfortable with.
With this in mind, I’ve added two new designs:
This has been a dispiriting couple of weeks. We are facing a new political reality and now, I feel, there is an increased social, political, and creative urgency — something I’ve never felt before. To address this, me and a few local Bay Area creators have decided to launch AfroGeeks Unite! It is a small initiative that aims to get more POC youth (particularly black youth) involved in the speculative fiction (used as a catchall for SF, comics, horror, etc.) community.
We are in the midst of another New York Comic-Con, and as is becoming customary with these major Comic-Cons, we’ve teamed up with Black Girl Nerds to bring BGNOC to the east coast. And now we can announce online merch outlet TeePublic will be sponsoring the meet up! For a limited time, TeePublic is having a site-wide sale that ends during NYCC weekend. But fret not! Fans of the NOC will get a one-week extension on the sale. Click through to find out how.
Last month, one of our favorite blogs reached another milestone as Angry Asian Man celebrated its 15th anniversary. A decade and a half of being one of the most influential Asian Americans on the internet is no easy feat, so we’re hoping you can head on over to his site and help Phil Yu with his annual donation drive. You’ll get some cool swag out of it too.
The countdown begins, and I’m super excited to announce the guests I’ll be having at my booth for New York Comic-Con this weekend!
It’s always a pleasure and honor for me getting friends to come do some signings, but this year just seems to have some more excitement for me.
Have you felt it? There’s been an awakening…
You’ve watched all of the unboxing videos. You camped in line outside Toys R Us, waiting for a special midnight opening. Now, #ForceFriday is finally here. Even though Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still three months away, you would be unwise to underestimate the power of Star Wars merchandising. Hell, you can’t spell swag with out SW, right?
Speaking of swag, we’re giving away some of it. Keep reading if you want to know how.
So… it’s about that time of year again.
I’m getting ready for a few comic conventions I’ll be attending this year, and originally I wasn’t planning on making any new tees. But… this one just kinda came naturally to me. So I had to make it.
I’ll be bringing this design with me to the New York Comic-Con later this year in October. And there, I’m only going to be bringing about 36 of these in total with me. And those 36 will be spread out from sizes Small, Medium, Large, XL, and XXL. Meaning just like 6-10 of each size. But for this design only, I’m going to try something different. I’m going to open this design up for pre-order.
Want to see how a vendor booth goes from being a bunch of cardboard boxes to an elaborate thing of t-shirt selling beauty?
Today is the first day of New York Comic-Con, and Epic Proportions is once again taking up some prime real estate in the Jacob Javits Center. If you are going to be at the show, come by and say hi at Booth #2010. We even have DC Comics superstar Bernard Chang at the booth for the whole show!

Its that time of year again! One of my favorite times of the year!
Once again I’ll be at New York Comic-Con at the Javits Center at Booth 2010. The same location as last year and the same size booth! Meaning, its another 10×20 corner booth. Which might not mean a lot to most people, but this is a BIG deal for me.
And I have some really cool news too!
My good friend Bernard Chang will be joining me at the booth the entire con!
If you haven’t heard, there’s a little independent movie that just opened in theaters this weekend called Thor: The Dark World. Last month, friend of the blog Jerry Ma had these exclusive t-shirts — featuring artwork by legendary Thor artist Walter Simonson — for sale at the Epic Proportions/SIUniverse booth at New York Comic-Con. Now that the con is over, Jerry’s offering limited quantities of these shirts for sale at epicprops.com.
Featuring artwork from Simonson’s upcoming Ragnarök comic with IDW Publishing, why not grab one of these shirts before heading to the multiplex and feeding your eyeballs the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? You could always opt for a different shirt in Epic’s line of “Signature Tees” featuring some of Walt’s artwork, including his take on the Norse God of Thunder, too.
