NOC Review: Behold ‘The Batman’

What does it mean to truly capture the essence of Batman? In the past 33 years, we’ve had three big budget, big screen franchises starring The Caped Crusader. And each time, at one point or another, we’ve more than likely heard the phrase “the definitive version of Batman” uttered among colleagues, friends, and fanboys. However, in these 33 incredible years, which have seen their shares of highs and lows with adaptations of the mythology, there surprisingly has never been a truly detective-oriented Batman story put to live action film. Until now.

Breaking Down ‘The Batman’ Press Event with the Cast and Crew

The light shone brightly on the dimly lit backdrop of the Warner Brothers studio lot during a random night in February. Displayed high above was the familiar shape that represented vengeance and justice: the sleek silhouette of a bat! In a week that was uncharacteristically warm during this time of year, even for Los Angeles, things were about to heat up even more. For shortly, before a limited number of members of the press, The Batman would soon appear!

The New Poster for ‘The Batman’ is Coming in Hot

I actually mean that literally. There’s a lot of fire in this one.

To be honest, I’m not sure what it is with studios giving us some really gorgeous artwork, then slapping together obligatory “disembodied faces” with Photoshop for final posters. The MCU is guilty of it. DC is guilty of it. Star Wars is guilty of it. And it’s not my favorite trend overall.

DC FanDome has been a BLESSING all day today. But the greatest gift of all, has been this spectacular trailer for The Batman! Relationships, Secrets, Politics, and Nostalgia: A ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Conversation

This year, audiences will grab their portkeys to journey once more into J.K. Rowling’s ever expanding Wizarding World, when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald comes to theaters November 16, 2018. The sequel continues the enchanting adventures of magizoologist, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), and his colleagues, as they race against time to prevent dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) from fulfilling his goal of wizard domination over non-magical beings. The film, with higher stakes than the first movie and a much darker tone, also features a welcome return to a setting we’ve been missing for seven years: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

In anticipation of the film’s release, The Nerds of Color were able to meet with returning stars Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Ezra Miller, as well as franchise newcomer Callum Turner, and producer David Heyman for a fantastic conversation about the film, their characters, and the return of Hogwarts and Albus Dumbledore.

My Thoughts on Dope

[I wanted to write this reflection the weekend of its release. I decided that I needed a little more time because the film hit home in too many ways and I needed some space from it to get a better handle on how I wanted to approach it. This will not be a typical review, nor will it be an endorsement — despite my endorsing the film whole-heartedly. I have no idea what this is, but I needed to get it out.]

Hip-hop is fandom. While it may not be explicitly geek/nerd culture, it is fandom of the highest order. If anyone chooses to refute this, they aren’t being intellectually or culturally honest. Never has this connection been so blatantly displayed than in Rick Famuyiwa’s 2015 gem of a film, Dope. [I have a lot more to say about this. Watch this space in the next month or two]

NOC Reviews Mad Max: Fury Road

As humankind ventures deeper into a digital being, Mad Max: Fury Road reminds us that we still live in an analog world. Life after the apocalypse will have no synthesized dings or chimes for audio cues, we will have only the roar of revving engines, bursting flamethrowers, war drums, and a gas-powered electric guitar to warn us that danger is in the distance.

It took 30 years for George Miller to return to the wasteland, but the timing couldn’t have been any better. Miller has taken the uncompromising arthouse nature of the original Mad Max movies, and combined it with 30 years of experience and the technology to create the fully realized, seemingly impossible world of Fury Road.

The result is an action movie that will be the benchmark to which every one to follow will be judged.
