Later, Keith interviews Friend of the NOC Marc Bernardin about his various projects and his 10-year podcasting adventure and friendship with Kevin Smith.
Forget Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or The Dark Knight. After nearly three decades, filmmaker Kevin Smith finally concludes his epic trilogy with the Clerks III trailer that just debuted — even if Dante and Randall weren’t supposed to be here today.

Continue reading “Netflix Doubles Down on ‘He-Man and Masters of the Universe’”I will never understand why so many fanboys are dead set against change. Sure, “nostalgia is a hell of a drug,” and all that, but Masters of the Universe: Revelation on Netflix is proof that change is the best thing that can happen to the stories we loved as children.

Continue reading “Kickstart This: Marc Bernardin’s Directorial Debut, ‘Splinter’”In 1982, Mattel revolutionized the toy industry when it unleashed its line of 5.5-inch action figures, Masters of the Universe. The following year, Filmation released an accompanying animated series, like all toy lines in the ’80s, and a generation of kids would never be the same. Now, nearly forty years later, a new generation will get to witness the ongoing battle between He-Man and Skeletor in Masters of the Universe: Revelation when it comes to Netflix on July 23!

On a recent episode of Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast, Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada revealed that Marvel Studios has retained the rights to Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Of course, this isn’t the first time Quesada has assumed the rights to Namor had returned to Marvel — and Namor’s movie rights are some of the most confusing in comic book movie world. Still, it’s long overdue for a movie featuring one of the high-profile members of Marvel’s Illuminati, not to mention the fact that Namor is a perfect opportunity to cast an Asian American male as a lead in the MCU!

“The Runaway Dinosaur” is a children’s book that our Flash’s mom used to read to him when he was younger about a lost dinosaur. Our Barry-saur is also lost, but in a place we’ve only been in passing: in the Speed Force. I think. What kind of noun is the Speed Force, anyways? Only Kevin Smith, the director of this episode, knows.
I recently spent some time following questions (and sending one) to Vincent D’Onofrio on Twitter as he responded to Kingpin questions; another reminder that the countdown to Netflix’s April 10 Daredevil release is getting closer and closer. Daredevil has been my favorite superhero since junior high, so as more and more is revealed on a weekly basis, the anxiety is gradually chipping away at my sanity. From the dark and gritty tone in the teaser and then reinforced in the trailer, to the TV-MA rating, all things point to Mr. Murdock finally getting his cinematic justice. See what I did there?
Someone recently asked me: “I’ve never read a comic, but I want a primer before the show. What should I pick up?”
Two mysterious lands far away from one another — yet linked by seas of soybeans — birthed a child born of melody, harmony, rhythm, and the smell of soy sauce. The child was destined to become a musician… and a tofu-loving pescetarian. But first, between musical gifts, came dreams of Jedi knighthood, ninjas, and flying with a cape.
My dad says he took me to Return of the Jedi when I was 3. I don’t remember it, but judging from the reaction my mom gives when this is mentioned, it happened. What I do remember very well from childhood is becoming obsessed with Superman in the early 80s. It seemed about right being surrounded by farms in a Nebraska town 60 miles from Smallville (okay, the Kansas border). Superman links farmland Nebraska with farmland Goiás (Brazil). My dad and my tio Laurinho took me to Superman III a year later. Remember, it took a bit more time for movies to travel back then. After that, it was capes and the same tio, or anyone else I could get, making me fly in both Brazil and the U.S. while trying not to break stuff.
Before I ring in Christmas 2013 with a traditional viewing of my favorite Holiday film, Batman Returns — this year with a special Fatman on Batman commentary track courtesy of Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin, I wanted to take a minute and thank all of you who have been reading and enjoying The Nerds of Color these last few months. It has really been an honor and a privilege to make this site a reality, and it blows my mind everyday that so many of you have taken the time to engage in our nerdy conversations.
We hope to bring you an even better NOC experience in 2014!
