NOC Review: ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is Super Fun but Far From Invincible

In 1983, a spin off of the popular Donkey Kong arcade game hit arcades in Japan. That game was called Mario Bros., and featured the Jumpman hero of Donkey Kong, now named “Mario,” teaming up with his brother Luigi. The game became legend and 40 years later, the Super Mario Bros, as we know them today, are finally getting the big screen treatment they deserve (as I said before the 1993 movie doesn’t count). But is it the movie we deserve? Keep reading to see what we thought of The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

Discussing Donkey Kong with ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Star Seth Rogen

Donkey Kong is an icon! Little do people know Mario was actually a spin off of the original Donkey Kong game where the eponymous ape threw barrels at the then-unnamed character, “Jumpman,” who later became Mario. So when jumping into the role of the most famous video game ape in the world for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Seth Rogen had a lot to live up to. And thankfully, he nailed the role, like he was the king of the jungle!

Talking about Toad with Keegan-Michael Key of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’

I’m not going to lie, Toad is my favorite character from the Mario franchise. He’s small, scrappy, courageous. And he’s literally the fastest accelerator in Mario Kart, which gives me the upper hand (I’m cheap like that). So it was exciting to hear that not only would he have a prominent role in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but also the talented voice behind him, Keegan-Michael Key, completely nailed the Toad voice!

Hop on the Rainbow Road in the New Poster for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’

2023 is a good year to be a Mario Brother! Just last week, guests at Universal Studios Hollywood got to experience the first US iteration of Super Nintendo Land, and in just two months, the plucky Italian plumbers are getting their very own animated movie (I would say “first movie” if I could, but that title is unfortunately tainted, and no amount of revisionist history can change that).

NOC Review: ‘The Fabelmans’ is Fine

It’s award season, which means every studio is going to tout their maudlin batch of contenders that qualify as “cinema” all over town. Trying to get voters to desperately nominate them for every award, while name-dropping the who’s-who of bait-worthy talent — all while every self-important and self-proclaimed “cinephile” pretends to preach about the difference between true “art” and “garbage” as if they invented the concept of “film” and are the authorities between what “real filmmaking” is and isn’t.

D23Expo: ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ To Explore How Title Lion Becomes A Great King

Though Jon Favreau’s The Lion King may have been a visual wonder, it didn’t do anything to differentiate itself from its animated predecessor. As such it was a poor telling of an animated classic.
