‘Elemental’ Clip Paints the Ground Below and the Sky Above

Elemental made a big splash over the weekend with its international debut at the Cannes Film Festival. There, the main voice cast of Leah Lewis (Ember) and Mamoudou Athie (Wade), plus members of the French-language voice cast Adèle Exarchopoulos (Ember) and Vincent Lacoste (Wade) tonight on the beach joined director Peter Sohn, producer Denise Ream, and EP and CCO of Pixar Pete Docter. And now, the studio has released a brand-new clip showing what a meet cute looks like between fire and water.

Earlier this year, The Nerds of Color took a trip to Emeryville, California, to catch a sneak peek of Elemental and spoke to Sohn and Ream about finding the humanity in a story about two sentient opposing elements finding commonality.

Additionally, Pixar released a clip from the upcoming film that sees Ember and Wade taking a scroll in one of Elemental City’s parks. In it, we see Ember step on a green mineral turning her flames from orange and yellow to emerald green. Wade is clearly impressed with this chemical reaction, and she shows what happens to her when she ignites other minerals. It’s a gorgeous sequence where the corresponding musical tones reflect the beauty of science and her spirited personality.

Wade also has something to show her. As he skims across the pond, he sprays water across the sky to reveal a rainbow, leaving Ember with an equally impressed reaction. The interaction mirrors the film’s plot synopsis, where two opposing elements discover they have much more in common than initially thought.

During our interviews, we talked to Sohn and Ream about the film’s immigrant story and how it relates to the opposites attract plot in conjunction with the science of real-world elements. So it should be fun to see how that all plays out when the film’s final cut comes out in theaters in June.

Elemental also features the voices of Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera, and Matt Yang King. It opens in theaters on June 16, 2023.
