Gemma Chan Joins ‘Captain Marvel’ as Minn-Erva

Humans star Gemma Chan is joining the MCU in Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel.

The British actress has been cast as Kree geneticist, Minn-Erva aka Doctor Minvera. In the comics, Minn-Erva was a Kree spy and enemy of Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson). Chan joins Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn in the film. Mendelsohn is rumored to play a villainous role as well.

Chan expressed her excitement on social media when the news came out:

Chan is best known for her work on the AMC/Channel4 series Humans, which will premiere its third season later this year. She will also be seen in this summer’s Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel. In the fall, she’ll be seen in Focus Features’ Mary Queen of Scots, alongside Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan.

The details of the movie are being kept secret, but we already know the film will take place in the ’90s, before all of the MCU films. The Skrulls, a green-faced race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters, will serve as the main villains.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the film with Geneva Robertson-Dworet behind the script, with previous drafts by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman.

Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
