The IX Best Moments from the Final ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Trailer

Finally, after weeks of anticipation — and one half of terrible football (unless you were a New England Patriots fan) — the world finally got to see the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and ultimately, the final trailer of the Skywalker Saga. And it did not disappoint!

Here are nine (or make that IX) things from the trailer that stood out the most:

I. All the Pilots!

At the end of The Last Jedi, only a handful of Resistance fighters were left to fight off the rising threat of the First Order. Fortunately for General Leia and her crew, it looks like they’ve not only rebuilt the Rebellion, none other than Lando Calrissian is in the middle of the crowd, holding court (in a Gambino colorway, no less).

II. All the Ships!

What’s the point of having all these Rebel pilots if you don’t have ships for them to fly? From the looks of it, we’re going to finally get a proper space battle in the Sequel Trilogy. And not only is the Falcon leading the charge (with its round radar dish restored!), but it looks like the Ghost from Star Wars: Rebels is joining the fight too! Are we going to see live action Hera Syndulla and crew?! Because I have some actors in mind!

III. #WheresRose? #TheresRose!

Like so many Rose Tico loyalists, I too have been concerned by the lack of Kelly Marie Tran’s presence in any of the marketing and merchandise leading up to The Rise of Skywalker. Check out the podcast for more of my thoughts on that. Also, it looks like Dominic Monaghan and Billie Lourd (who is the spitting image of her Return of the Jedi-era mother😭) in the background. This could be quite an intriguing team-up.

IV. FinnPoe Forever

Speaking of team-ups, The Rise of Skywalker looks like it’s going to allow Finn and Poe to go on an adventure together! We’ve already seen them riding a skiff on a sand planet in past teasers, but the latest trailer has everyone’s favorite StormPilot ship teaming up on several occasions.

V. Kylo Ren is Wet

That is, admittedly, a pretty badass shot of Kylo emerging from the waves, preparing for his final confrontation with Rey. It’s also the point in the trailer where Reylo shippers all over the internet lost their minds. If you don’t believe me, just search the phrase “But I do” on tumblr. I also realize that the “All the Ships” header I used for number 2 above could apply to the last two as well.

VI. The Emperor’s New Groove

We’ve known since Celebration that Palpatine had somehow survived the events of Jedi and is the phantom menace behind the events of… well, all three trilogies, I guess. Now, I wasn’t that thrilled that Palpatine was going to figure in to the Saga again, but I must admit the shots of the Star Destroyer breaking through the ice and the very Ralph McQuarrie-inspired throne room have piqued my interest.

VII. Jannah Leading the Calvary… On Horseback!

We still don’t know a lot about Naomi Ackie’s character, but the shot of her leading a band of Rebels through a Star Destroyer on Space Horses is the best scene in the history of Star Wars. It also looks like Finn and Rose are right behind her, so this is basically payoff to the fathier scene from The Last Jedi you all complained about. So ha!

VIII. C-3PO Speaks for All of Us

After seeing this scene in the trailer, try reading Anthony Daniels’ goodbye tweet from January again without crying. Threepio and Artoo are the only characters that have been in every film of the Skywalker Saga and no one is prepared to see them go. Sad Beep, indeed.

IX. Always.

If Threepio’s last words didn’t get you, the final line of the trailer being spoken by the late Carrie Fisher — on what would have been her 63rd birthday — definitely did.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20. Tickets are on sale now.

  1. Yes to ALL of this! I may not have been around when the Skywalker Saga started, but I’m glad to be here as it comes to an end. Let’s finish this right!
