The ‘Birds of Prey’ Egg Sandwich Explained

With the release of DC’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of the One Harley Quinn), many have been wondering about one particular scene when Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) describes in detail about obtaining the perfect egg sandwich for her breakfast. The way Harley describes the egg sandwich could almost be told from a sexual point of view or just how we, and many people, describe food. Unfortunately for Harley, she does not get to enjoy the egg sandwich due to the fact she ends up being chased by Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and it drops to the floor.

The loss of Harley’s sandwich is something that many of us felt when we spill or drop our favorite food. We had to know what’s up with the egg sandwich bit.

Director Cathy Yan revealed that the egg sandwich was already written in the script by the time she came on board. After bonding with Robbie and writer Christina Hodson over food, especially junk food, Cathy thought it was hilarious and wanted to make sure to emphasize that particular egg sandwich.

“I always thought it was such a great idea, and it takes a certain sense of humor that we all shared and we had to get it right,” said Yan over the phone from the Birds of Prey press tour on Tuesday. “It was hard because we shot in Los Angeles. As we all know, the best egg sandwiches are in New York. I live in New York, but we went out of our way to make sure the egg sandwich was authentic as possible. It was wrapped in a specific type of wrapper like we would have in a dirty bodega in New York. I think it was an ode to that. We had all spent some time in New York as well. Obviously, Gotham is very inspired by New York.”

The scene left many fans craving for an egg sandwich and reliving our favorite egg sandwich memory.

Yan laughed, “I remember years ago going to a cart and picking up an egg sandwich every day. So I think for all three of us, it was a very personal thing as well.”

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is out in theaters now.
