BIO: Podcaster, voice performer, comic con co-founder. There are lots of “ers” for Michael McNutt, nowadays he prefers just to be known as “father” and husband…er. Born overseas in Okinawa Japan to an African American father and a Filipino mother, McNutt bounced a little early on from Japan, to the states, then to Bremerhaven, Germany until finally landing back in the states where he has been since 1981. He recalls that his mixed ethnicity was never brought up until he was fully entrenched in the U.S. Early childhood and adolescent saw a very mono-racial experience for McNutt. He was more entrenched in black culture than Filipino, a view and experience that would evolve once he entered college and progressed into adulthood, but not without some struggle. McNutt has always been known as a communicator, which was a nice way of saying he talked too damn much. Before the internet was a thing, he taught pubic speaking at George Mason University and was a sports reporter for the Connection Newspapers of Northern Virginia. McNutt’s gift of gab was especially useful as the co-creator and co-host of the (now defunct) HaterNation internet radio show and podcast, which boasted 100+ episodes, interviewed movers and shakers in motion pictures, music, comedy, television and pop culture and was featured in Northern Virginia Magazine’s Best of Series. A twenty year veteran of event and conference management, McNutt took his love of event direction and pop culture to the next level in 2017 when he was part of the leadership team behind NOVA-Con, Northern Virginia’s first major foray into the comic convention craze. In 2018, McNutt and friend Kevin Bednarz decided to develop their own event and for two years, Northern Virginia’s All-Star Comic Con was one of the most talked about “regional conventions” in the country, earning praise from convention regulars as well as actors, authors and artists spanning the pop culture spectrum. His podcasting and comic conventions days are behind him, McNutt finds himself oftentimes “walking the earth like Kwai Chang Caine in Kung-Fu.” When he finds time, he mentors young meeting professionals, lends his voice for use in commercials and award shows and offers coaching guidance in basketball (The former high school coach finds solace in coaching local teams and his sons, age 12 and 9).
