Like most folk, I’m not too keen on reminders of my ever-increasing age. But this one, well, it’s not too bad of a milestone reminder.
Miles Morales, Marvel’s best Spider-Man, debuted nearly 10 years ago! You read that right, it’s been almost a decade since Miles inherited the Spidey title from Peter Parker and immediately one upped the kid from Queens.
Okay, in all seriousness, Miles and Peter have been compared since the former’s debut in Ultimate Fallout #4. A comparison that only grew as Miles grew into his role as the new Spider-Man of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. But I wouldn’t call him Peter’s replacement, successor or his sidekick. All of these titles devalue Miles’ individuality and ignore the differences between him and his mentor. Peter is an important part of Miles’ life, but he isn’t what makes him such an inspirational and amazing Spider-Man.
Miles skyrocketed into popularity with 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which asked audiences to take their own “leap of faith” alongside the young hero as he made his big screen debut.
Marvel made a similar leap introducing a new face under a mask that’s belonged to one iconic character for decades. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of what would become one of their greatest decisions, Marvel is celebrating Miles in big ways; starting with some sensational new variant covers.
The new covers show Miles teaming up with heroes from across the Marvel Universe. Incredible artists such as Mike Del Mundo, Javier Garrón, and Russell Dauterman showcase Miles in a variety of different iconic suits, including his classic comic suit and suits from the recent Spider-Man: Miles Morales video game.
