Grab your purple and gold jerseys and a big tub of popcorn, it’s time to play ball. Or rather, it’s time to watch a bunch of other people play ball. Or… actually, it’s time to watch a guy buy a team of people who play ball. Point is, Lakers fans have a lot to be excited about.

The first trailer for Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty has just premiered. Director Adam McKay tackles the story of the Los Angeles Lakers during their most pivotal moments in NBA history. The comedy/drama will chronicle the 1980s roster of the team, as they’re bought by Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) and catapulted into their spot as the NBA’s most star-studded crew.
Filling up the Lakers roster are Dr. Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, DeVaughn Nixon as Norm Nixon, and newcomer Quincy Isaiah channeling Magic Johnson. The film also stars Adrien Brody as Pat Riley, Jason Clarke as the Logo Jerry West, Gaby Hoffman as Claire Rothman, Hadley Robinson as Jeannie Buss, Sally Field as Jessie Buss, and Jason Segel as Paul Westhead.
The series, based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, has been picked up for ten episodes. The first of which will premiere on HBO Max in March of 2022.
