Matthew Vaughn Says to Expect a ‘Kick-Ass’ Reboot in Two Years

It has been almost 12 years since the first Kick-Ass film premiered with a sequel following behind it three years later. Director Matthew Vaughn surprised journalists, including The Nerds of Color, during The King’s Man virtual roundtable with the announcement of a reboot of the franchise in two years.

“Oh, you’ve got a big reboot, a big reboot of Kick-Ass in two years,” said Vaughn. “Big reboot.”

Although he wouldn’t go into details, Vaughn revealed all the rights to Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass revert back in two years and that’s when they plan to reboot. Whether or not they will bring back the previous cast or start fresh with a new cast, Vaughn refused to answer.

“I think Kick-Ass became a new type of genre,” Vaughn revealed. “Whenever we made it, everyone was like, ‘Oh, you can’t make R-rated superheroes. No one will want to see an R-rated superhero. You can’t do this. You can’t do that.’ So, when I had to say ‘dare’ and it was so nuts that I went ‘Yeah, great. It’ll cause just as much controversy and everyone will talk about it and as many people will love it [and] people will hate it.'”

Based on Mark Millar’s comic book, Kick-Ass told the story of an ordinary teenager, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who sets out to become a real-life superhero, calling himself “Kick-Ass.” Despite not having any super powers or skills, Kick-Ass worked alongside Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) to take down gangster Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong).

Vaughn did offer that he would need a very, very brave actor or actress to play the new Kick-Ass, because “it will scare the shit out of them.” As for Taylor-Johnson, Vaughn will always have a part for the actor in his films.

“Yeah, Aaron, definitely,” Vaughn said enthusiastically.

The King’s Man premieres in theaters on December 22.
