Leighton Meester and Writer Sarah Alderson Talk ‘The Weekend Away’

Leighton Meester stars as Beth in The Weekend Away, which is written and based on the novel by Sarah Alderson. The author also serves as an executive producer. The new film is now streaming on Netflix!

A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman (Leighton Meester) is accused of killing her best friend (Christina Wolfe) and her efforts to get to the truth uncover a painful secret.

Meester is best known for her role as Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl. Most recently, she can be seen in How I Met Your Father. Additional credits include Single Parents, Monte Carlo, Inside, The Roommate, Remember the Daze, Making History, By the Gun, Country Strong, Life Partners, Date Night, The Oranges, The Judge, That’s My Boy, and Like Sunday, Like Rain.

Alderson released The Weekend Away in 2020. Along with being the author of over twenty novels in the YA and psychological thriller genres, she is a screenwriter for both television and film. Most recently, she was a writer and producer on the CBS series S.W.A.T. and currently has multiple original projects in development.

I had the opportunity to speak with Meester about what sort of preparation she did for the role as well as decompressing after such a suspenseful story. I was also able to ask Alderson about what was most important to her when turning her book into a film, changing the ending for The Weekend Away, and more!
