James Gunn and Peter Safran to Lead Newly Formed DC Studios

Well, that settles it. Warner Bros. Discovery has found their own K.E.V.I.N robot to lead the DC Universe in film, television, and animation. Actually, make that robots, plural, as Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that James Gunn and producer Peter Safran will be co-CEOs of the newly created DC Studios.

Ironically, this news comes on the heels of Marvel Studios revealing the trailer for its latest Guardians of the Galaxy special on Disney+, also directed by Gunn.

The duo will report directly to WBD boss David Zaslav and unlike outgoing boss Walter Hamada, will have control beyond DC Films to also lead the way for television, streaming, and animated projects.

Even though DC Studios will have its own banner inside Warner/Discovery, some previously announced DC projects still will not be part of the Gunn/Safran regime. For instance, Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, which was greenlit before the formation of the new studio, will still report to Warner films heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. Sames goes for Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise and spin-offs.

Everything else, it seems, will be folded into a singular vision for the DC Universe overseen by James Gunn (whose The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker have already taken the DCEU into critically acclaimed new directions) and Peter Safran (who is a producer on both the Aquaman and Shazam franchises). This includes the long-awaited news that Henry Cavill is indeed officially back as Superman for the foreseeable future.

With Black Adam’s current box office success and Henry Cavill promising a dawn of hope renewed, this is the most excited I’ve been in a long time as a DC fan. A lot of people mocked The Rock for promising a change in the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe. Looks like The Rock was right and the critics should’ve have known their roles and shut their mouths!
