Cracking the Case with the Cast and Producers of HBO Max’s ‘Perry Mason’

In 2020, Executive Producers (and geniuses) Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey unveiled a gritty HBO Max reboot of the iconic legal hero, Perry Mason, to the world. Audiences who were unsure of how the change in tone would work for the 1930s character were quickly wowed by the grounded, and relevant take on the character Team Downey, the cast, and the showrunners took with the material.

Two years and multiple Emmy nominations later, and Perry Mason is now back, for a second season debuting today, Monday, March 6. And we at The Nerds of Color were so fortunate to be able to speak to the shows dynamic cast and creators to commemorate the debut of the latest season!

Leading the cast is multi-Emmy-nominee, Matthew Rhys, who plays Mason. But the character would be nothing without his team, including characters Della Street and Paul Drake, played by Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk.

We were given a chance to sit down with Rhys, Rylance, and Chalk, as well as executive producer Susan Downey and showrunner Michael Begler to discuss what’s in store for Team Mason in this exciting season, which sees the team tackling issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, and corruption.

Take a look at what they had to say about the new season right here:
