The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

“Well, it came to me as a book and I was taken by the fact that it seemed to open up the possibility for a woman to be so many things all at the same time, and to try to sort of break this character out of the compartmentalization that while you’re a mother, you can’t be anything else. I felt that that was, I don’t know, a worthy exploration and something that would be timely,” she told me. “The way I make decisions about things is very much that it resonates with me in a way that it sort of sticks and sticks and sticks, and I start to think, ‘Well, if it’s really sticking with me and I’m thinking about it, it’s going to do the same with others.’ I kept thinking about, why do I think she should actually just have her self-realization trip in the year, and not explore any of this and she’d be safer, and then I realized that’s the whole problem. Like, we have to be vulnerable, we have to be open to love, even if the first, second, third, or fifth time it didn’t work, you still have to stay open.”
