Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth Discuss Working Together on ‘Lonely Planet’

Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth star as Katherine Loewe and Owen Brophy in Lonely Planet. The new romance premieres October 11 on Netflix.

A reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.

“Since minute one, when she walked into the restaurant, we’re having coffee together, and right then and there, I knew that we were gonna be able to do what we needed to do,” Hemsworth expressed to me. “There was this instant trust and connection, and that bond just grew throughout the shoot. We never had to work to find that, it was just there.”

Dern added, “It’s so true, and literally every second just was deepened by how generous, available, protected, hilarious, and vulnerable the space of the two of us being together was for the whole, yeah, from the moment we met.”

We talked about how they felt seen by each other while working together, how the experience of making this film transformed them, and which song they think best describes their characters’ relationship.
