Disney Does Anime Again with ‘Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation’

Disney is doing MORE Japanese anime styles, and I’m here for it. Based on Japan’s popular mobile game, Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation is set to debut October 29 on Disney+ and Hulu.

The new Japanese anime series centers on seven iconic Disney Villains — the Queen of Hearts, the King of Beasts (Scar), the Sea Witch (Ursula), the Sorcerer of the Sands (Jafar), the Fairest Queen (Evil Queen), the King of the Underworld (Hades), and the ThornFairy (Maleficent) — and how their actions inspired the creation of seven magical dormitories at Night Raven College, an elite academy for budding mages.

Yuken Enma, an ordinary high school student from Tokyo, finds himself unexpectedly transported to Night Raven College. Though he has no magical abilities or knowledge of this world, he must navigate and survive this strange world to find his way back home. However, he may be in trouble with the Rose-Red Tyrant — Riddle Rosehearts, leader of Heartslabyul, a.k.a., the Queen of Hearts dorm, after he befriends his troublemaking new classmates, Ace and Deuce.

Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation is the latest Japanese anime series to merge Disney intellectual properties, alongside the three volumes of Star Wars: Visions. Disney+ has also included Murai In Love, The Fable, Go! Go! Loser Ranger!, Cat’s Eye, and more. The series feels like a blend of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. It’ll be interesting to see how they used Disney properties.

The game, first launched in Japan in 2020, was created by Aniplex and Disney Japan. It has been downloaded over 4.8 million times in Japan, with several manga and novel adaptations published.
