This January, Abrams Books will be publishing a graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler’s classic novel, Kindred. At San Diego Comic-Con, we had the opportunity to talk with the creators behind the graphic novel, John Jennings and Damian Duffy — collectively known as J2D2, as they were signing galley copies of the book!

John, Damian, and Keith talk about the honor and challenges behind adapting Octavia Butler’s story and why it’s important for new audiences to engage with her work and why it’s taken so long to have Butler’s work adapted. They also discuss the long tradition of black speculative fiction and Afrofuturism and their place in mainstream literary spaces. John also talks about his recent Eisner win!

Stay tuned for even more conversations from San Diego Comic Con 2016!
