McFarlane Toys Officially Picks up the DC Multiverse Baton

A few months back, I took some time to reflect on Mattel’s final wave of Batman-related action figures. After nearly two decades in the DC Comics licensing game, Mattel finally gave way to a new licensee. McFarlane Toys (and Spin Masters) were going to be the new holders of the DC legacy though little was known about what either toy company would offer. All we knew was that the figures would debut some time in 2020. Well, it’s a new year, and all that has changed!

Late last night, McFarlane Toys sent out a press release — which you can find at the bottom of this post — that detailed the first wave of 7-inch figures that will hit retail this month! Each figure will sport over 20 points of articulation (which is in line with McFarlane’s Fortnite figures) and come with multiple accessories. Some will even come with pieces to build a Batmobile. Other surprises in the announcement include a figure based on The CW’s Arrow as well as a series of Animated style figures — which is in direct competition with DC Collectibles’ own Animated lines, but whatever.

It’s also wild that McFarlane is calling this line “DC Multiverse” and is using packaging that is remarkably similar to the ones used by Mattel but giving collectors a completely different scale. That probably won’t sit well with most folks. And while it’s less surprising that Superman and Batman would be leading the charge in this new line, I don’t think anyone was expecting that 8 out of the first 13 figures available in Wave 1 would be versions of the World’s Finest. How soon before #WheresWonderWoman starts trending?
