Let’s face it folks, there’s a lot of Batman stuff out there. I don’t have to really tell you that. All you need to do is turn a corner and about twenty different Batmen will show up asking you to vote them as the best Caper Crusader (spoiler alert, it will forever be Kevin Conroy and TV’s Adam West in a landslide tie).
But honestly, can you really blame DC for milking the Bat-Cow (look it up) for so long. Since his debut 82 years ago in Detective Comics #27, the brooding superhero has been DC’s most popular character. Second only maybe to Superman.
It’s so easy to sell Batman stories these days too. A deep, dark look into the psyche of mankind and the line between good and evil? Sign me up. A super detective with absolutely zero powers using nothing but his brains and some fine tuned brawn to solve cases and break faces? Sure.
It’s no surprise that Batman can keep readers and watchers glued to their seats, but what about listeners?
There’s plenty of visual Batman media out there, but for those of us who want to explore the dimly lit avenues of Gotham City on the go or in the background, there’s hope yet. A podcast titled Batman Unburied is coming, and it just found its two most key figures.
Winston Duke and Jason Isaacs have signed on for the podcast. Duke, known for his incredible performances in Black Panther and Us, will be voicing Bruce Wayne. While Isaacs, most known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, will voice Bruce’s wise butler/father figure Alfred Pennyworth.
If you haven’t heard of Batman Unburied, I don’t blame you. Though it was announced last year, details on the project have remain buried (pun absolutely intended) deep until this recent casting announcement. We knew prior that the audio series would be executive produced by David S. Goyer, a name fans of DC’s more recent Batman projects like The Dark Knight trilogy and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will recognize.
We also know that the project was originally slated for a 2021 release, although an exact release date hasn’t been locked down yet, so that could change. Further details are still being kept under wraps, but if you’re a fan of Batman, psychological thrillers, crime podcasts, or all of the above, you’ll definitely want to keep Batman Unburied on your radar. You can read the official summary for Batman Unburied below:
Batman Unburied is a psychological thriller that takes us on a new journey deep into the mind of Bruce Wayne introducing a slew of dark twists and turns with a number of classic Batman Super-Villains. When audiences meet Bruce Wayne he is a forensic pathologist, working in the bowels of Gotham Hospital and tasked with examining the victims of The Harvester, a gruesome serial killer preying on Gotham’s citizens. Not only will the Super-Hero be forced to face his own mental demons, but he will also have to overcome them in order to save the citizens of Gotham as his alter-ego Batman.
Batman Unburied will be available to listen to sometime in the near-future on Spotify. Though it’s the first major in-house podcast announced by DC, there’s more to come. Projects surrounding the Bat-Family, Superman, Wonder Woman, Katana, and more are being developed. I for one can’t wait to see (or hear) what DC has planned for their venture into podcasting!
