‘Twenty Something’ Director Aphton Corbin Inspired By Her Youth for SparksShort

Director Aphton Corbin is excited and surprised to see her Disney-Pixar SparksShort Twenty Something come to life on Disney+.

“My inspiration was my own 20s journey through life where I just feel like a new director — the panic and stress of ‘oh my gosh, did they pick the wrong person?’ I’m just barely figuring out how to be a functional adult in life,” said Corbin during a Zoom interview with The Nerds of Color. It was a fun insecurity to dig into of what was making me feel this way.”

The SparksShort Twenty Something tells the story of Gia celebrating her 21st birthday, but she’s not alone. Instead, inside her coat are three versions of her during different moments in her life — one-year-old Gia, 10-year-old Gia, and 16-year-old Gia. This is a story about the insecurities of adulting and how we’re all just faking it ’till we make it.

“I think the pre-teen stages, I blocked out,” Corbin jokes. She wanted to add the three pivotal ages in her life, which were one, 10, and 16.

“For me, 16 was so emotionally charged,” revealed Corbin. “If we’re going to level of subconsciousness, 16 was a perfect super ego. You’re so emotional and vulnerable all the time. One is where I want it, when I want it. There are no checks or balances. Ten felt like a good age where you feel like you have life all figured out.”
