A new trailer for Gotham Knights, the next Batman-themed game from WB Games Montreal, premiered at DC FanDome today. Fandome is a one-day online event showcasing upcoming releases from DC Comics and Warner Brothers. The first Gotham Knights trailer debuted at 2020’s inaugural FanDome, revealing a Bat-Family (if not family-friendly) approach with Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood as the main cast. Here’s the latest look at Gotham Knights:
Fandome also offered a behind-the-scenes look at the game, including comics creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s perspectives on having their original storyline and characters adapted for the AAA action-RPG game.
Gotham Knights asserts that it is a new story standing apart from the massively-popular “Arkhamverse” games, which included Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight (developed by Rocksteady Studios), and Arkham Origins (developed by WB Games Montreal). Batman is deceased, which is where we left him at the end of Arkham Knight.
The option to choose from a quartet of familiar Bat-Family characters is among the main enticements of Gotham Knights; all four characters were playable in Arkham Knight in a limited fashion, but the series thus far has been (appropriately) Batman-centric. Although the neon motifs and overall lighter disposition of the characters suggest a less-immersively-gloomy concept than the Arkham games, Gotham Knights also teases a macabre horror angle by emphasizing the Court of Owls, which, I won’t get too far into it, but they have one of those nursery rhyme theme songs that is creepy as hell.
Gotham Knights is set to be released for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox and PC in 2022.
