‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Has Oscar Isaac Dreaming of the Superhero Life

Marvel Studios embraced the magical, out-of-this-world, animated, and sometimes political in their streaming shows on Disney+. Now they will embrace the chaos in their dark and gritty streaming adaptation of Moon Knight. And after months of waiting, we are finally getting to see how they will do that in a brand new trailer.

The series stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, a former left for dead after an operation goes wrong. The dying Spector is then brought to an unearthed tomb and placed before the statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. He is then fully revived and takes up a life of crime-fighting at Khonshu’s request.

In the comics, Spector suffers from a form of dissociative identity disorder., which causes him to slip into different personalities from a mild-mannered gift shop employee to a mercenary. Unable to tell the difference, Spector uses these different personas from the different social circles to gather information. But what makes this all the more interesting is how much we can trust the storytelling, considering they could be from Spector’s DID or his connection to Khonshu.

One thing is for sure, though, it seems that the series’ primary antagonist, played by Ethan Hawke, may have the answers as he recognizes the chaos that exists within Marc, or is it, Steven? Whomever it is, Hawke’s character wants Steven to embrace that chaos. And this thing looks psychologically chaotic as Steven has to grapple with his inability to sleep and tell the difference between his waking life and dreams. All of which sounds heavy, especially when you believe you are possessed by a moon god with a penchant for violence.

Moon Knight may not fit into the classic family-friendly mold of the MCU, but it is a perfect way to introduce some of the darker and more gritty material. After all, these Marvel Disney+ series have shown they aren’t afraid to tackle some of the heavy material like trauma, politics, morality, and sense of identity.
