New Trailer for ‘The Black Phone’ Dials Up the Scares

Today, Universal released the latest trailer for Scott Derrickson’s latest horror thriller, The Black Phone. The new film features a shockingly unsettling performance from Ethan Hawke as “the year of villain Hawke” continues (witness his terrific performance as Arthur Harrow in Moon Knight for more)! I’ve been personally waiting for this one for a while. The Black Phone debuted at Fantastic Fest in September 2021, and Universal was originally planning to release it in the January doldrums of cinema before realizing they had a potential hit on their hands thanks to stellar reception from early screenings. Thus they’ve moved the release date to a prime June 24th spot. Derrickson is an incredibly gifted and underrated filmmaker, with Sinister being one of the finest horror films to be released in the past 10 years. His work on Doctor Strange was terrific as well, but sadly he had to depart for the sequel due to creative differences.

That being said, him re-teaming with screenwriting partner C. Robert Cargill and Hawke means we’re in for a real sinister treat!
