It’s been almost 35 years since Willow hit the big screen. The fantasy adventure epic from Lucasfilm starred Warwick Davis as the titular dwarf with a heart of gold who goes on a perilous quest to save Tir Asleen from Bavmorda, the evil queen of Nockmoor. Together with Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and Sorsha (Joanne Walley), they protect Elora Danan, an infant princess who is prophesied to bring about Bavmorda’s downfall. Praised for its special effects and pupperty, the film lives on as a cult classic, especially to those who may not be fans of Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

Now, Disney has given Willow new life in the form of a limited streaming series set to debut exclusively on Disney+. The epic period piece fantasy sees an unlikely group of six heroes setting off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.
The Nerds of Color had a chance to talk to Davis, along with executive producer and writer Jon Kasdan about bringing Willow back for audiences new and old. And in the seven of the eight episodes that were given to us, this grand quest will feature a same-sex love story, people of color, and all of the action, magic, and swordplay you’d come to expect from a fantasy epic like Willow.
Additionally, we got to talk to Tony Revolori, who plays Graydon, a shy prince whose linguistic skills prove to be valuable; Ellie Bamber, a humble kitchen maid who joins Willow on his quest; and Ruby Cruz who plays Kit, a princess and daughter of Sorsha who sets in motion a quest to rescue her twin brother, Arik (Dempsy Byrk). All four talked about carrying on the legacy of the film through their characters, being a part of something with so many spoilers, and more.
Check out our interview with everyone.
The first episode of Willow premieres on November 30, 2022, on Disney+.
