It was a pleasure to talk with Alaqua Cox about Marvel’s Echo, premiering January 9 on Disney+ and Hulu, with assistance by an ASL interpreter. We’ll be sharing more from the Echo press event over the coming week.

Cox (no relation to Charlie Cox, but, hmmm) plays Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo, first introduced to the MCU in Hawkeye. Like the character Echo, Alaqua Cox is Native American, deaf, and has a prosthetic leg. We got to talk about her recently becoming a parent, her relationship with Lauren Ridloff (Eternals’ Makkari, the first prominent deaf character in the Marvel films) and Douglas Ridloff (ASL consultant on Hawkeye), and her hopes for Echo’s impact on the deaf community. And for you real nerds, Cox also shows us how to sign “Daredevil” in American Sign Language, and we share a moment fanboy/girling about my Jessica Jones t-shirt.

Echo premieres on Disney+ and Hulu on Wednesday, January 9, 2024. The entire series will be available on the premiere date. Echo is the first TV series under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which emphasizes lesser-known characters in unconventional situations, and features mature themes. The series focuses on Maya Lopez as she engages Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire, and relates to plot threads developed in both Hawkeye and Daredevil.
