We speak with the main cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 on what adventures wait for the USS Cerritos.
It’s hard to believe that Star Trek: Lower Decks is already coming to an end. Five years ago, when this adult animated comedy debuted in August of 2020, creator Mike McMahan and his team boldly took Star Trek in a whole new (and hilarious) direction. Following the wacky adventures of Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boilmler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and the rest of Captain Carol Freeman’s (Dawnn Lewis) crew of the USS Cerritos, Lower Decks has managed a balance of hilarity and reverence for the Star Trek universe, making it a standout in the modern era of Trek.
In anticipation of the fifth and final season premiering this week, we spoke with Newsome, Quaid, Wells, and Cordero. In addition to speaking on Lower Decks, Newsome gives us a slight tease on her new Star Trek comedy she’s co-writing with Justin Simien. It was clear from our conversation that they had learned as much from their characters as they imprinted onto them, and that the joy of Lower Decks was as palpable behind the scenes as it is in front. It will certainly continue to be a standout for years to come. You can check out our whole conversation on YouTube below.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 will debut on Paramount+ on October 24.
