‘Switches’ Writer/Director Brandon Broussard on Stylish Love

Switches is a rom-com that follows the story of Dawn Butler (Chanté Adams) and Jake Butler (Sinqua Walls), a married couple who decide to switch bodies for 24 hours. Written and directed by Brandon Broussard, we had the opportunity to chat with him about his solo debut.

What happens when the honeymoon phase of your marriage dwindles, yet there’s an opportunity to add some spice back by switching bodies for a day? Brandon Broussard answers this question in a hilarious tale of a couple who take full advantage of this concept in his gender-swap comedy. From the funny and relatable performances by Walls and Adams, to the stylish and fast-paced visuals, Broussard has crafted a short film that touches you in a way you’d expect from a hard-hitting drama.

The film, set in Los Angeles, opens with a quick highlight of newlyweds Dawn and Jake frolicking through the streets of DTLA. Shortly after, we flash forward and catch up with the couple three years later, where financial issues and a looming divorce have overshadowed all of the whimsy and joy we had just witnessed. They seek help from a startup company called Happy Couples, where a doctor prescribes them a trial pill called Switch. One dose each, and they’re able to switch bodies for 24 hours, allowing them to walk in each other’s shoes.

With tones and a premise that reminded me of Black Mirror, Broussard’s gender-swap comedy packs a punch in its 20-minute runtime. Hysterical moments ensue that include workplace chaos, an arrest, and a surprising turn of events after testing out a quick hookup while swapped. But at its core, there’s an undeniable undercurrent of love and care between our leads that has you rooting for their relationship the entire time.

From film inspirations such as Freaky Friday and The Matrix to his own upbringing, Broussard shared some of the key personal elements that influenced Switches.
