‘Kung Fu’ Sneak Peek: When Henry Met Evan… (Exclusive)

It’s always awkward having the potential new guy in your life meet the ex-boyfriend-guy who is still in your life.

In this exclusive clip above from tonight’s Kung Fu episode “Patience,” Nicky (Olivia Liang) is sparring with Henry (Eddie Liu) while waiting to hear back from Dr. Chau. Their workout gets interrupted by Evan (Gavin Stenhouse), which creates an awkward interaction between Henry and Evan. Both have heard a lot about each other from Nicky, who is nervously watching the two interact. She cuts the tension by asking Evan if he has any news on Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman). He does. They talk privately over footage found of Zhilan and Dr. Chau in Singapore where it’s obvious that Zhilan kidnapped Chau against his will. Evan tells her the Singaporean Police are cooperating with the FBI to track Zhilan and arrest her, especially since she kidnapped an American citizen.

The CW’s reboot of Kung Fu premiered strong with 1.4 million total viewers and a 0.2 in the 18-49 demographic, scoring The CW’s highest total viewership number for a Wednesday debut in seven years since The 100 debuted in 2014. The second episode, which premiered last week, kept the momentum going with identical numbers to its series premiere.

It has been almost 50 years since the premiere of 1972’s western martial arts series Kung Fu, which starred white actor David Carradine yellowfacing as a mixed Asian Shaolin monk. Now, Kung Fu‘s retelling of the story is righting the wrongs that were made from the original. Developed by Greg Berlanti and Wendy Mericle, the new series centers around a Chinese American woman, Nicky Shen, who returns home to San Francisco, after spending three years at a Shaolin Monastery in China to escape the familial pressure to be successful and marry into a nice Chinese family. Her time at the Monastery is cut short when her mentor/teacher, Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai)  is murdered by a mysterious assassin. With nowhere else to turn to, Nicky returns home to face the family she abandoned and somehow find Pei-Ling’s killer.

Executive produced by Christina M. Kim, Martin Gero, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV, Kung Fu stars Olivia Liang, Tzi Ma, Kheng Hua Tan, Tony Chung, Jon Prasida, Shannon Dang, Eddie Liu, and Vanessa Kai.

Kung Fu airs Wednesdays on The CW.
