With the upcoming release of the ninth installment of the Fast Saga F9, The Nerds of Color got to chat with director Justin Lin about the 20-year franchise and how the movies have evolved — including the theme of family.
Lin — who directed the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, ninth, and the upcoming 10th installment of the films — has been with the franchise for over 15 years and has grown up a lot with the cast and crew. His definition of family has also grown as he and the cast had families of their own as the Fast movies have continued. Instead of just explosive car chases and upping the action, Lin wanted to also emphasize a change in priorities for Dom (Vin Diesel) because he is now a father.
Of course, the conversation had to go towards bringing back a character that Lin helped create — Han (Sung Kang). Like many of the fans who sought #JusticeForHan, Lin also wanted to focus on getting justice for the character. He didn’t want to just bring back the character and then everything would be alright, because this character had unfinished business, especially with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). When asked if we will see if Han will confront the man who tried to kill him, Lin smiled and revealed, “Yes. I feel like there is a lot of rich issues and interactions that need to be explored.”
