Let’s address the elephant in the room. Game of Thrones did not end well. For every brilliant season the show had, there was an episode in the final season that disappointed fans. But whatever the case, the fact of the matter remains, before GoT there had never been anything like it on television ever, and still isn’t. We can throw a million and one fantasy clones at a streaming service (Shadow and Bone, Wheel of Time, Foundation, The Witcher, Cursed, etc.). And yet none of them ever matched the sheer scale or cinematic quality of fantasy storytelling that the original show achieved.
So naturally it makes sense for HBO to feel the need to continue the story. And they’ve chosen to do so through House of the Dragon — the first of many upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs. The show is set to take place during the reign of the Targaryen empire, 200 years before the events of the original series, and will revolve around the impending end of their fabled dynasty.
Today, as a huge surprise to fans, HBO has decided to reveal its first glimpse at the series in the form of a new teaser trailer. And I need to say, it does look impressive so far. Take a look and see what you make of it:
House of the Dragon features an all-star cast including Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Considine, Milly Alcock, and Eve Best. I’m definitely willing to give it a chance, But hoping this isn’t a “fool me once/fool me twice” situation. That being said, as Fraiser and Better Call Saul have proven, sometimes spinoffs can, in fact, exceed or live up to their predecessors. Let’s see how House of the Dragon fares.
