Animated ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ Film is Coming in 2024

Sound the horns of Rohan and Gondor! And gather your personal Fellowship! Because between the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series debuting its teaser trailer during the Super Bowl yesterday, and this announcement here, fans of The Rings are surely eating!

Today, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation have announced that on April 12, 2024, a new Middle-Earth film is coming: The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim!

The film will mark the first theatrical release in the Lord of the Rings franchise since The Hobbit trilogy wrapped up in 2014. But unlike its game-changing predecessors, New Line and WB are looking to change the game on animation! The franchise hasn’t been depicted in animated form since the 1978 Ralph Bakshi films hit theaters, so this will be an incredibly interesting, unparalleled experience for this series!

Along with the announcement, New Line and Warner Bros have released some gorgeous concept art for the film from the gurus at Weta Workshop. Take a look at the official concept art below:

Per New Line:

Award winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (the Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series) directs with Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, from the screenwriting team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, executive producing and Joseph Chou (Blade Runner: Black Lotus TV series) producing. The writing team of Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou have penned the screenplay based on a script from Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews. The Lord of the Rings returning creative team also includes Oscar winner Richard Taylor and esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

As such you can expect to see Kamiyama’s visionary style from Blade Runner: Black Lotus present in the film. Production has been in progress since last year with Sola Entertainment.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will explore the untold story of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life of one of Middle-Earth’s most legendary figures; Helm Hammerhand — the King of Rohan.

Additionally, the legend, Peter Jackson, just shared this post about the upcoming release:

I think this could definitely be astonishing! The Lord of the Rings: The War of The Rohirrim will hit theaters April 12, 2024!
