Disney+’s ‘Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers’ Live-Action Film Given the SNL Treatment

Today, Disney+ released the first trailer and new poster of their original movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and it’s a lot.

After 30 years of not having any new Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers content, the hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy catches up with the two former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles.

Using all of Disney’s properties in a sort of “Space Jam 2/Ralph Breaks The Internet” kind of way, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers is throwing in all the Easter Eggs for Disney fans. It’s also seems to be getting the Saturday Night Live treatment by way of The Lonely Island.

Directed by TLI’s Akiva Schaffer, the film stars former SNL writer John Mulaney as Chip and former SNL cast member Andy Samberg as Dale — basically, playing versions of themselves. Mulaney’s dry humor is there as well as the spastic ramblings from Samberg’s Dale, but the film feels very unoriginal. The storyline is also dealing with trying to find missing toons, which sounds very much like an updated Disney+ version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, who ironically makes an appearance in the trailer.

But, we all know the SNL formula works. It’s produced many successful films and stars, including Samberg, Mulaney, and Pete Davidson. This could work with Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers. The film already has an extensive celebrity cast including KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and Chris Parnell.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers premieres May 20, 2022, exclusively on Disney+.

In Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.
