In a very exciting surprise from this morning, writer/director Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) took to social to announce the title for the highly anticipated sequel to Knives Out!
Knives Out was a critical and box office hit in 2019, featuring Daniel Craig as super sleuth, Benoit Blanc, and an all star cast of mega-stars like Chris Evans and Ana de Armas in an epic Agatha Christie-esque whodunnit. In addition to making over $300 million worldwide on a budget of around $40 million, Craig and de Armas were nominated for Golden Globes for their performances, and Johnson was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay that year. Thus it was no shock that we were soon going to get another Benoit Blanc mystery.
Now, officially announced to debut this holiday season, Johnson has teamed up with Netflix to reveal the title of the upcoming sequel: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Johnson also debuted a motion teaser which you can view here:
If you read his thread, you’ll see why Johnson is such an excellent director for these types of projects. His passion for Christie-inspired mysteries and the genre overall is palpable. And given how good the previous Benoit Blanc mystery was, I have no doubt this will be just as terrific!
Glass Onion will of course feature the return of Craig, but this time, he’ll be joined by another, completely different mega cast featuring the likes of Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. While many times, I don’t always feel original films need sequels, Knives Out was one such film that I thought definitely would work as a mystery anthology of sorts with Benoit Blanc each time, similar to Christie’s own Poirot or Sherlock Holmes. Thank goodness Johnson agreed with me!
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will hit Netflix this holiday season, 2022!
