The third and final Guardians movie in the James Gunn-saga will come to an end in May 2023. Fans at San Diego Comic-Con were treated with a teaser trailer — giving us a glimpse of what the story will be about.
The story will center Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and his origins and how it plays out to today with dealing with Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).
“I needed to honor Rocket. Rocket is the character I felt closer to than I ever created [on film],” Gunn told The Nerds of Color, in collaboration with POC Culture. “He’s a lot of different things for me.”
Gunn really wanted to “tell [Rocket’s] truth” and would have regretted it if he had not come back for the third film. He also wanted to continue to tell a family story because the Guardians are a family — which means to expect some changes within the group and expect drama.
“I think they’re like any family,” Gunn explained. “They have their ups and downs. You see characters completely change. You’ll see a completely different Mantis and Nebula.”
Gillan, who plays new Guardian member Nebula, says this is the saddest of the films because they’re saying good-bye to each other for now with the trilogy ending.
“So sad to think about saying goodbye,” said Gillan.
Although Gunn is done with his Guardians saga, the Guardians story may continue with a new story and director later in the future.
