Staying Sharp with Anna Akana and Yoshi Sudarso from ‘Blade of the 47 Ronin’

Blade of the 47 Ronin hits Netflix today! Back in 2013, the original film, 47 Ronin, debuted in theaters to unfortunate critical reception and low box office grosses. Nevertheless it was a moment in which Keanu Reeves really first acknowledged/embraced his Asian roots on film. In that grand tradition, it seemed fitting to reboot the franchise, but in the hands of Asian filmmakers, including director and expert stunt choreographer, Ron Yuan. He was able to recruit two amazing folks to the cast, renowned actress, comedian, and outspoken creator Anna Akana, and famed stuntman, actor, and all around Power Ranger, Yoshi Sudarso.

We had the tremendous opportunity to meet with both Akana and Sudarso for a brilliant, nearly 45-minute interview where we got to talk all about the film, and the importance of bringing it to life with a predominantly Asian cast and filmmakers. Take a look at what they had to say below.

NOTE: This interview does contain spoilers for the film. You have been warned!

It was truly a wonderful honor speaking with both of these funny, talented, and hard-working actors. And we, at The Nerds of Color, can only hope we’ll be able to do it again soon!

Blade of the 47 Ronin is now streaming on Netflix.
