Finding the Magic Words with Zachary Levi of ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

Welcome to Shazam! week folks! Back in 2019, Billy Batson made his glorious film debut with the release of the utterly charming Shazam! The film ended up gaining some of the best reviews in the DCEU, and was a financial success. And a large part of that was due to the terrific performance from star Zachary Levi, who truly embraced the zany Big-meets-DC wish fulfillment concept of the picture.

Well now, everyone’s favorite kid-turned-hero is back, and we had the extraordinary honor of chatting with Levi, himself, about the new sequel: Shazam! Fury of the Gods — hitting theaters this Friday!

I was most definitely a huge fan of the first movie. It was actually my favorite film of the DCEU from that era. And that’s because it wasn’t a self-serious slog of “cool for the sake of being cool” slow motion garbage. And it put the joy of the superhero genre ahead of some pretentious itch a self-indulgent director needed to scratch.

Shazam! was a self-aware, innocent, good time that embraced and at times even subverted tropes common within superhero films. Add to that my profound love for NBC’s underrated underdog series Chuck, and I found myself super geeking out at the prospect of talking with Levi.

And thus, we are so grateful we were given the opportunity to have fun and talk about the movie and the potential future of Shazam in the DCU going forward. Check it out for yourself right here:

But that’s not all folks! Keep your eyes glued to the site all this week for more coverage from Shazam! Fury of the Gods, including interviews with stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer, director David F. Sandberg, and writers Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, as well as our review of the film hitting Wednesday!

And don’t miss Shazam! Fury of the Gods hitting theaters this Friday, March 17!
