Shazad Latif on the Nuanced Relatability of ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’

In anticipation of What’s Love Got to Do With It releasing in the US this weekend, we spoke with one of the stars, Shazad Latif, on his role as Kaz in the film.

We discussed what makes the challenges his character deals with so universal, and some of the most fun days to film on set. We also discussed the news of the Star Trek: Section 31 film starring Michelle Yeoh, and whether he might return as Ash Tyler!

Kaz (Shazad Latif) and Zoe (Lily James) are two London friends who have grown up as neighbors, with their families having become close over the years, sharing in various Muslim and Pakistani traditions via Kaz’s family, the Khans. When Kaz finds the need to get married and acquiesces to an arranged marriage, documentarian Zoe takes it on herself to film, with the Khan family’s consent, the whole ordeal, and shed light on a cultural practice that many view as “outdated.” Written by Jemima Khan and directed by Shekhar Kapur, What’s Love Got to Do With It sees Kaz and Zoe go on journeys of self-discovery and enrich themselves and their families on the way.
