Samuel L. Jackson and Olivia Colman Talk Marvel Studios’ ‘Secret Invasion’

Samuel L. Jackson, who is also an executive producer, and Olivia Colman star as Nick Fury and Sonya Falsworth in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion. The first episode of the thrilling, new espionage series is now streaming, exclusively on Disney+.

In “Secret Invasion,” set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart the imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

“It’s kind of wonderful that they gave me an opportunity to take Fury in another direction, to let people know that, yeah, he’s been gone for a while and whatever happened during The Blip, shook him in a real kind of way, that Nick Fury is not the super strong, impervious to fear person that everyone always thought he was, that he finally ran into something that he couldn’t figure out,” Jackson expressed. “He’s been gone for at least six years we know on S.A.B.E.R. and didn’t come back, even for Maria, and when he does come back, everyone that he meets from the present to people from the past, look at him and go, ‘You’re not the same guy.’ And as smart as Fury is, he’s heard it enough, he finally figures out that, okay, I gotta do something to figure out how to get back to being the Nick Fury I need to be. Some of that is made possible through connections of people that are further in his past than just Maria and Talos, which is where Sonya comes in, this person that was part of The Shadow World that he inhabited before there were supers.”

“I think I didn’t expect it to be quite so warm and welcoming because it’s a big thing, it’s a big machine,” Colman shared in regard to what surprised her the most about joining the MCU. “I was nervous but everyone was incredibly welcoming. Once you were actually there working with people, it felt like, ‘Oh, I know this. It’s the same, it’s actors together talking.’ I know there are plenty of films I could have gone on to and it would have been green screen and genuinely terrifying for me, but this was lovely and Sam said, ‘Come on in, we’re gonna have a lovely time,’ and it genuinely has been so kind and welcoming, and it hasn’t felt as big as I know it is.”
