Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Edgar Wright‘s live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel of the same name, now considered to be a cult classic, is getting the animation treatment from Netflix. The streaming giant has released first trailer Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
The upcoming eight-episode series may have an anime feel to it, but it teases the same frenetic energy and musical styles from the graphic novel and film. The result is something that is explosively fun to look at and to rock out to.

By now, you should know the story. But if you don’t, here’s the premise: Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and bass guitarist who lives in Toronto, Canada, has fallen in love with a local delivery girl named Ramona Flowers. However, if he wants to date her, he will have to defeat her seven evil exes. Of course, there’s a little bit more nuance to this story, but the trailer perfectly captures the emotions of falling in love, telling your story through music, and fighting for someone or yourself.
Fans of the live-action film will be excited to know that the cast of the original live-action film will provide the voices of their respective characters. That means Michael Cera returns as the titular character, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead coming back to voice Ramona Flowers, and Ellen Wong voicing Knives Chau. The series also sees the return of Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Anna Kendrick as Stacy Pilgrim, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, and Johnny Simmons as “Young” Neil. Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and Mae Whitman all return as the Evil Exes.
O’Malley’s graphic novel is a love letter to coin-op arcade games and manga, and the series intends to embrace every aspect of that and the visual source material. As such, Anamanaguchi, the composer behind the Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game, returns to compose the score. And Science SARU (DEVILMAN crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, The Heike Story, Inu-Oh) is the animation studio animating all eight episodes. Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski are the executive producers, writers, and co-showrunners.
All eight episodes will be released on November 17, 2023.
