John Krasinski on His Inspiration for ‘IF’ and the Magic of the Family Genre

John Krasinski wrote, directed, and stars in IF. The film, which is perfect for the whole family to enjoy together, will be released in theaters everywhere this Friday, May 17.

IF is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.

“I watched tons of movies as a kid, but the ones I think that impacted me the most are the ones that gave me credit for being more than just a kid. Meaning that they assumed that I could handle thematically and emotionally things that were bigger than me. Things that maybe my parents or my teachers thought might be too big to think about, you know what I mean? And I think that’s so important. I think it’s so important, both as kids and adults, that we allow ourselves to have conversations about things that make us emotional or things that scare us because the truth is we all have bad days, but it’s about how you go about that bad day,” the actor explained. “I think that that’s what IF is trying to do and certainly that’s what E.T. did for me, it’s what The Goonies did for me, it’s what Dead Poets Society did for me.”

We discussed why he wanted to make a movie like the ones he grew up loving, what Jim Halpert’s childhood IF would be, and how his kids inspired not only this story but his character as well.
