Director Jon M. Chu has always been amazing at bringing musicals to life on the big screen. With the release of the new Wicked trailer, it seems he may have done it again!
Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Wicked is the untold origin story of the witches of Oz — the “Wicked Witch of the West” Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda, the Good Witch (Ariana Grande). The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and become unlikely friends. Elphaba proves herself powerful and, therefore, useful to the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), and learns the truth about Oz — and herself.
We all know the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and G(a)linda, but do we really know them?
The film also stars Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; newcomer Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Glinda’s friends Pfrannee and ShenShen; Keala Settle as a new character for the film, Miss Coddle; and, Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.
The film is split into two parts — Wicked: Part 1 releases on November 27, 2024 and Part 2 is scheduled to premiere on November 26, 2025.
