Muslim Matchmaker is currently in development, exclusively for Hulu, The Nerds of Color has learned from sources.
From the creators of the groundbreaking Netflix series Indian Matchmaking, Smriti Mundhra, Meralta Films, and produced by ABC News Studios, matchmakers Hoda and Yasmin will set out to help Muslim American singles find their lifelong partners while ensuring they stay true to their faith (i.e., no modern dating apps or hookup culture). From cringey first dates to “moments of profound connection,” Hoda and Yasmin support their clients in navigating modern dating with the intention of marriage while staying true to their values and beliefs as Muslims.

Muslims have been having a moment on TV. From great shows like Ramy, Mo, and, of course, Ms. Marvel, more American audiences can see our religious communities as regular people like them, with cultural distinctiveness that remains relatable. But there’s one area in which Muslims have not seen themselves often or centered — and that’s in reality TV! While much of the reality television landscape may very understandably be uncouth (or straight-up haram) for members of our communities, surely there must be some halal compromise for us in this space. I can tell you for certain that there are many Muslims (such as myself) who love reality TV (we need the laughs, okay?) who would love to see something like this. With Muslim Matchmaker, our wish may be granted!
I, for one, am stoked to watch this series and the sure-to-be-evolving drama of it all (as good reality TV has!). Again, having Muslims in this popular TV space will be sure to have non-Muslims relate to us as well. I’m expecting laughs, tears, emotional rides, and perhaps a controversial moment or two that hopefully doesn’t push the bar too far. Mabrouk to everyone involved, and we hope to see you on our screens soon!
