Superman: Truth, Justice, & the Asian American Way

On the eve of June and the post-Convergence DC Universe next week, we are in breathless anticipation to see the new, more diverse DC Universe as promised by the publisher’s “DC You” campaign. Part of that diversity is represented by the all-star writing talent attached to the flagship books of DC’s most iconic character: Superman.

Hard NOC Life was honored to welcome Action Comics writer Greg Pak (@gregpak) and new Superman writer Gene Luen Yang (@geneluenyang) — whose preview story you can read here right now — on the show to talk all things Man of Steel.

Topics covered on the show include:

  • The difference between writing graphic novels and monthly superhero comics
  • The thought process behind stripping Superman of his secret identity and his new look
  • How Superman can represent the embodiment of the Asian American immigrant experience
  • Greg’s “Hapa Radar” being set off by Dean Cain in Lois & Clark
  • The Superman stories that resonate the most for Gene and Greg, including this awesome Action Comics story from the ’60s.
  • Rethinking what the “Man of Tomorrow” moniker means in 2015 — which leads to a tangent on Back to the Future
  • Answering the age old question — Who is the real identity? Superman, Clark Kent, or Kal-El?
  • All this and more on Hard NOC Life! Watch it on your screen, hit “play,” and check this.

  1. That was hateful and unnecessary, Micah. Superman is not white, he’s a Kryptonian. He’s from an entirely different galaxy. He’s an alien. Who are you to say he should look like a white guy?
