Disney Journeys to a Place Beyond What’s Possible in ‘Strange World’ Trailer

Walt Disney Animation Studios is no stranger to having films about characters going on thrilling adventures into the unknown. Now, we are getting a first look at what’s to come in the first trailer for Strange World, a throwback to the classic pulp magazines of the past which featured stories of explorers to lost worlds and bizarre places.

Directed by Don Hall (Oscar-winning Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer Raya and the Last Dragon), and produced by Roy Conli  (Oscar-winning Big Hero 6, Tangled), Strange World evokes those classic sci-fi adventures of a family of intrepid explorers venturing into a mysterious world beyond time and space.

While the newsreel opening, sci-fi spooky music, and bombastic narrator tell us to prepare ourselves for a journey beyond what is possible — in all caps no less — Hall and Nguyen’s upcoming film appears to be more than just love letter to the pulp magazines of the past as it centers on a family of explorers who journey journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await. But the real danger comes from the familial differences that threaten their most crucial journey yet.

Strange World features the voice of Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer who doesn’t exactly live up to his name as he would rather be back on the farm instead of going on dangerous adventures.

Here’s the brief plot synopsis for Strange World:

Jake Gyllenhaal (The Guilty, Spider-Man: Far from Home) lends his voice to Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer. The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest — and by far — most crucial mission.

And here’s the teaser poster.

Strange World opens in theaters on November 23, 2022.
