Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, and Josh Lucas on Working with the Incredible Cast of ‘Palm Royale’

Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, and Josh Lucas star as Maxine, Robert, and Douglas in Palm Royale. The first three episodes of the series are now streaming on Apple TV+ and new episodes will premiere every Wednesday through May 8.

Palm Royale” is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, “Palm Royale” asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year of 1969, “Palm Royale” is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.

“I think initially the call from Laura Dern, I was like, ‘Yes.’ We’ve been wanting to work together for so long and I read the book, met with all the producers, Tate Taylor, and then Abe Sylvia wrote just the most beautiful script. It was just kind of check, check, check, yes, yes, for everything,” Wiig, who is also an executive producer, expressed. “I didn’t even hesitate. All the people involved, the story, the character, all of it, it was a very easy yes for me.”

“First of all, the comedy. For me to jump into something that is comedy is a challenge and that’s very important,” Martin explained, reflecting on the story. “I’m learning. I’m just taking notes because with [these] amazing goddesses of acting and god of acting, I just need to walk into set open to learning. And for me, that’s what it was. It was the script, obviously, and to be able to be surrounded by such an amazing cast.”

Lucas shared, “A week before I was brought this project, I had stood on the street in New York City and I had just happened to [have] seen Bridesmaids on the airplane, and I was like, ‘Why can’t I have a role like Jon Hamm has?’ I literally screamed at my agent, truly. It was week later, I was like, ‘Wow, that’s just a — here it is.’”

I spoke with the trio about what originally made them want to be part of the project and their favorite character dynamics.
