Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Diablo Cody, and Zelda Williams Talk ‘Lisa Frankenstein’

A new kind of romcom is headed to theaters this Valentine’s Day in horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein. Ahead of the film’s upcoming release, The Nerds of Color sat down to chat with Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, writer Diablo Cody, and director Zelda Williams.

We discussed the inspiration behind the quirky story, funniest moments on set, the stars’ favorite horror movies, and much more.

Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who also penned the 2009 cult classic Jennifer’s Body, explained the “connection” between the two films. “I feel like these movies kind of exist in the same world,” she told The Nerds of Color. “It’s the same kind of tone, same kind of themes. Even just for me, like, there’s an emotional connection between these movies.”

“This movie exists because of Jennifer’s Body,” she continued. “And if Jennifer’s Body hadn’t been rediscovered by people and found a new audience, I don’t think I would have ever had the confidence to write this.”

Newton revealed that she and Sprouse, who plays a non-speaking role with The Creature, didn’t have a chemistry read. But, the actress — who admitted to “having a crush on the Sprouse brothers since the age of seven” — said it all came naturally.

“We didn’t need anything. Because it’s all on the page,” she said. “We just loved this movie. I think we loved movies like this that in the past, so we just gave it a lot and it was easy, the chemistry. It’s already there. And we just made each other laugh a lot. And I think if you’re laughing a lot, audiences are gonna feel it.”

Lisa Frankenstein is a “coming of rage” tale about “misunderstood” teenager Lisa Swallows (Newton), who brings a handsome corpse from the Victorian era (Sprouse) back to life. Together, the two “embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”

The film opens in theaters on February 9.
